  • Notes
    • September 2024, this is a targeted placement based on DNA. New information can and should change placement laster;

I recently returned from a field visit centered in Glasgow, Barren, Kentucky. This was a successful venture connecting with new friends, new research clues, new material to digest and a personal perspective of the region’s distances, terrain, and transportation corridors. I have a new appreciation of transcribed lists and findings, even those I have read many times previously. Because any advancement on a Yates line helps the understanding of all Yates lines, I have included you on this update. Clearly when any better information are found, adjustments will be made accordingly.

George Woodford Yates, Sr. was born on 2 Jul 1773 in Culpepper, Virginia (son of John Yates and Elizabeth Betsey Gaines); died in 1835 in Barren, Kentucky. George married Elizabeth Larimer Browning on 28 Nov 1793 in Culpepper, Virginia. Elizabeth (daughter of Charles H. Browning and Mary Wade Strother) was born on 24 Jul 1774 in Culpepper, Virginia.

I have a much better appreciation that when George’s parents migrated to Kentucky, they settle but a few miles from their son(s) already present in Kentucky. John Yates was born on 2 Jul 1750 in Caroline, Virginia (son of George4 Yates and Frances Fielding Lewis); died on 4 Jul 1823 in Adair, Kentucky. John married Elizabeth Betsey Gaines in 1772 in Culpepper, Virginia. Elizabeth (daughter of Francis Gaines and Dorothy Boswell) was born in 1757 in Caroline, Virginia; died in 1820 in Adair, Kentucky.

I now presume that John and Betsy had a second son resident in Barren, Kentucky. Samuel Yates was born about 1780 in Virginia (son of John Yates and Elizabeth Betsey Gaines). Samuel married Nancy Boyd on 1 Jan 1802 in Barren, Kentucky. Nancy (daughter of John Boyd, Sr. and Susannah Wade) was born about 1782. Children: George Yates was born on 17 Jan 1807 in Barren, Kentucky; died on 13 Aug 1878 in Pike, Illinois. Sally Yates was born in 1810 in Barren, Kentucky. [1810, married 1802, 1 Father abt 1784, 1 Wife abt 1784, 2 sons abt 1803, 2 daughters abt 1803, 1 grandmother abt 1765]

I now have search radar alerted for any Boyd or Boydston connected to the Yates lines; I think they preceded things in Barren, Kentucky.

The remaining Yates between 1800 and 1820 consists of my XXXXGF John Yates, his son Robert, and his son, my XXXGF John, Jr. Nothing stands alone as a fact while considering who belonged to whom and when. I believe there is a strong connection between all these Yates found. And, as this area was still a wild wilderness of the time, my presumption is a trusted family association would be of high value.

I will use the Yates DNA study to give suggestions on the probability of placement in a presumed parent line (https://tinyurl.com/27w8qh5l ). When you test with autosomal kits you receive a report of matches, these are all DNA connected relations based on closeness and generation age. We are thinking of probabilities based on an as large of a Yates cousin match dataset possible.

In this dataset, we have importantly excluded DNA matches that link to a distant ancestor ending in our ‘brick-wall’; this means any DNA connection that only leads to John Yates, Sr., is not in this dataset; we are only considering then, Yates DNA matches without the artificial cap of our ‘brick-wall’. This is the essence of the whole Yates Study.

This dataset, without the brick-wall John Yates, Sr, matches have 302 unique Yates ancestral lines. The mean average of centimorgans is 17 cM and is similar in any subgroup of the dataset. The first descending split within the descending lines is between George Yates-Warfield (82 for 27%) and John Yates-Tucker (51 for 17%). We remain mindful that DNA inheritance is random and variable, it only takes one to prove the exception.

Based on probabilities I have selected George Yates-Warfield (82 for 27%) as the split to target a targeted parent for John Yates, Sr. The mean average of cM for both split groups is 17 cM, so no marginal difference. Within the George Yates-Warfield descending lines, I have detected 5 prominent descending lines based on probability of volume.

Joshua Yates-Boydston 5 matches for 2% of the total group.
Michael Yates-Marshall 8 matches for 3% of the total group.
George Yates-Elizabeth Betty 14 matches for 5% of the total group.
William Yates-Tapp 14 matches for 5% of the total group.
George Yates-Lewis 26 matches for 32% of the total group.

      ChatGPT 3 July 2024:

Know all men by these presents that I, William Boyd, Administrator of the Estate of Ex & Robert Boyd, deceased, of Franklin County, Dec in the State of Ohio, for divers good causes, me thereto moving, have nominated, constituted, and appointed, and by these presents do nominate, constitute, and appoint John Yates of Barrett County and State of Kentucky my true and lawful Attorney for me and in my name and Steat Coark for demand and receive 389 all and every part and parcel of the Estate of the aforesaid Robert Boyd, deceased, which he was by Law or would by Law be entitled to be in the hands or possession of any person whatsoever and also to sue for and recover the same by any suit or suits at Law which may be proper or advisable for the recovery thereof, either in Law or equity, and to all acts and things in adjusting, setting, and recovering the aforesaid Estate which I might or could do were I present and had done the same myself, also to receipt for and give any acquittance that may be required by any person for any part or parcel of the aforesaid Estate which he may receive. And further of purpose, I do authorize and empower the said John Yates to dispose of the said Estate in the manner following, to wit: to give one half of all the Estate to his son Benjamin Yates when he comes to the age of twenty-one years and the balance of the Estate to be equally divided between the rest of his children. But if the aforesaid Benjamin Yates dies before he comes to full age of twenty-one, then the whole Estate to be equally divided between the said John Yates's living children. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 4th day of February 1804.

      William S. Boyd

      Mark

      Barren County

To wit: February the 4th, 1804

This Instrument of writing from William

John Yates is the father of Benjamin Yates. This is evident from the part of the text stating, "to give one half of all the Estate to his son Benjamin Yates when he comes to the age of twenty-one years."

The document does not explicitly state the relationship between John Yates and Robert or William Boyd. It does, however, designate John Yates as the attorney and representative for William Boyd, who is the Administrator of Robert Boyd's estate. This implies a professional or fiduciary relationship rather than a familial one. William Boyd appoints John Yates to act on his behalf in matters related to the estate of Robert Boyd.
