1752 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1744-1754, folio 342. The first reference found for Michael Yates in the public records of Caroline County was on September 21, 1752, when a Negro named Ben belonging to Michael Yates was adjudged to be ten years of age, and one named Jenny was adjudged to be likewise ten years of age.
1753 DEED: Spotsylvania Co, VA, Liber H, 15 Nov. Michael and others witnessed the sale of three negroes from Nicholas Horn, of Caroline County, to Colonel William Walker and David Allen of Spotsylvania County, for consideration of L100. Inasmuch as his plantation lay near the boundary line of Spotsylvania County and where he and his wife owned land at one time or another, Michael Yates appeared frequently in the land records of Spotsylvania County.
1756 DEED: Spotsylvania Co, VA, Liber H, Folios 347,348. Indenture made4 October 1756 between Michael Yates and Martha his wife, Daniel May and Alice his wife, John Jones and Ann his wife of one part and James Nelson of Spotsylvania County of the other part that the said...... for consideration of five shillings to James Nelson his heirs and assigns forever all that tract of parcel of land containing 679 acres part of a patent granted to Michael Ginney lying in Spotsylvania County dated 30June 1726.
Indenture made 5 October 1754 between Michael Yates and Martha his wife, Daniel May and his Alice his wife, John Jones and Ann his wife of one part to James Nelson of Spotsylvania County of the other part the said doth fully freely and absolutely grant bargain and sell release and confirm unto the said James Nelson 670 acres being part of a patent granted to Michael Ginney lying in Spotsylvania County. This indenture release for land, was acknowledged by Michael Yates, John Jones and Anne his wife and Alice the wife of Daniel May, parties thereto, the said Ann and Alice being first privately examined by the Court and ordered to be recorded.
1757 COURT: Caroline Co, VA Order Book 1755-1758, 10 Nov. Michael Yates and John Estes were joint executors of the will of William Marshall, late of Caroline County, deceased. The will was presented to the court in Caroline County for probation by Elizabeth Marshall. It was proved by the oaths of Samuel Pittard, James Samuer and Sarah Tomson. Martha, the wife of Michael, was probably a Marshall. Dr. Michael Yates lived in Upper Drysdale Parish near Guiney Bridge. He practiced from the French and Indian War through the Revolution.
1761 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1759-1763, Folio 244, 13 Aug. Ordered Aquilla Johnson, Samuel Howes, John Estes, and Michael Yates or any three of them being first sworn before a Justice of the Peace for this County to appraise the Estate of William Conner, deceased, and return their proceedings to court. Folio 246, Michael Yates was also appointed to appraise the estate of Jeremiah Long.
1762 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1759-1763, Folio 273, On motion of Abraham Wilson, who married the widow of Jeremiah Long, deceased, and Samuel Hawes the executor, George Buckner, James Coleman, Michael Yates, and Aquilla Johnssn or any three of them were appointed to divide the Estate of the said Long between his widow and children.
1762 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1759-1763, Folio 292, 8 Apr. James Taylor, William Buckner, Robert Mickleberry, John Tilman, John Miller, Samuel Hawes and Michael Yates having been taken the usual oath to his Majesty's person and Government repeated and subscribed the Test and were Sworn Officers of the Militia in this County.

1768 DEED: Spotsylvania Co, VA, DB G, 12 Jul. Michael Yates, of Caroline County, purchased from Joanna Cook, of Spotsylvania County, for a consideration of L1 a tract of land lying in Spotsylvania County containing 150 acres "given and sold to the said Joanna by her father Cook." The tract adjoined the lands of Taliaferro Craig, John Craig, Samuel Dyer, and the heirs of Thomas Collins and the heirs of Thomas Salmon, deceased. The witnesses were John MacDonald, William Stears and Susannah Conell.
1769 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1763-1770, 9 Nov, Folio 457.Michael Yates was called into court and was caused to answer why he “concealed one Tithable." Folio 458, Ordered James Coleman, George Buckner, Michael Yates, and Aquilia Johnson or any three of them being first sworn to appraise the estate of James Castarpen, deceased, and return an inventory thereof to the Court. 14 Dec, Folio 465, James Gatewood, Michael Yates, and Richard George are discharged from the presentment found against them and that they each pay the losses which may accrue from the presentments.
1772 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1770-1772, 12 Jul, Folio 38.Michael Yates received 40 shillings from the county for work done to Thompkin's bridge. Folio 85, at the same court he proved the will of John Haley, late of Caroline County, deceased.
1774 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1772-1776, Mar, Folio 478.Michael Yates was sued by Garland Anderson... The only notation was "Deft (Yates) being arrested failed to appear."
1776 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1772-1776, 8 Aug, Folio 627.Michael Yates and James Coleman "two of the witnesses" proved the deed of gift from Thomas Davis to Elizabeth Davis.
At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Michael Yates was active for the cause of the Colony of Virginia and was a member of the Committee of Safety for Caroline County. The following shows the notice to the public of his having been elected: "Agreeable to the notice given the freeholders of Caroline County Assembled at the Courthouse this 9th day of November 1775, and their appeared to be a majority of Votes for the preceding Gentleman. “Michael Yates received the least number of votes of those elected, that is 80 votes, while Samuel Hawes received the highest number, that is, 185 votes. Michael Yates was re-elected on February 1, 1776, with a vote of 100, and was present at a session of the committee on February 8, 1776, and at another on February 23, same year. [Proceedings of Committee of Safety, Caroline and Spotsylvania Counties, Library of Virginia].
1777 COURT: Spotsylvania Co, VA, 8 Aug. George Yates gave bond of L500as security for Michael Yates as guardian for an orphan Mollie Butler. At some time guardianship passed to his son Dr. George Yates.
1777 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1777-1780, 11 Dec, Folio 37. "On motion of Doctor Michael Yates and for reasons appearing to the Court leave is granted to inoculate his family at the house of George Yates deceased."
1779 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Order Book 1777-1780, 9 Dec, Folio 205. "It appearing to the Court that Doctor Michael Yates was allowed the sum often pounds for medicine and attending Henry Raines and John Ross, two sick soldiers in the Service of the United States, but that he had never received any satisfaction for the same, ordered that it be now certified to the Treasurer for payment thereof."
1780 MIL: Thomas Moss of Caroline Co, VA, served as a drummer in 1754.He assigned his rights to French and Indian War Land Bounty Certificate No. 375-8 to Dr. Michael Yates on 10 Feb 1780. Testified to by George Yates and William Yates. Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Vol. 35, No. 3, Summer 1997.

1784 COURT: Caroline Co, Court Order Book 1781-1785, 8 Sep, Folio 315.Michael rendered his account to the court as the guardian of William Yates. This was probably the son of George Yates IV who would have been21 that year.
1786, Ibib., 1785-1787, Folio 356, Sep. Deed from Michael Yates and his wife to William Yates was proved by "the oaths of the witnesses there to and ordered to be recorded."
1787 TAX: Caroline Co, VA, 1WM 16-21, 12B>16, 7B<16, 8 horses, 27 cattle, M.D., physician, stud horse, 1.0.0. Charged with tax of George Yates, who at 16-21, was probably his nephew. Taxed on 877 acres valued atL366/10/9.
1788/1789/1790 TAX: Caroline Co, VA, on 877 acres in St. Margaret's District. The year 1790 was the last time Michael Yates, Sr., appeared on the tax list. Beginning in 1792 it was shown that his realty had been distributed to his heirs according to his will.
1789 Court: Will of Michael Yates proved in Sep Court (Court Minute Book1787-1791, folio 205).
1791 COURT: Caroline Co, VA, Minute Book 1787-1791, 8 Feb. William Yates and Daniel Coleman were executors of the will of Michael Yates.
Circumstances place Michael Yates as the eldest son and heir of George Yates III of Baltimore County, Maryland, and Caroline County, Virginia. The significant name of Warfield is carried down in this family which denotes the knowledge and sentiment which this branch had for their maternal grandmother in Maryland. Furthermore, one finds Michael Yates domiciled in that portion of Caroline County where George Yates III lived and died, and his age would place him definitely as a son of said George Yates. In addition to circumstantial evidence, there is documentary proof through the will of his son, Dr. George Yates, who died testate in Culpeper County, Virginia, in 1788. He wrote that his Grandfather George Yates, deceased, did in his lifetime make a deed of gift recorded in Caroline Co. The fact that Michael Yates had a son born before the death of his father establishes him as the oldest son, inasmuch as George Yates was a minor upon the death of his father.
